Dr. John announced about a week ago that he’d be doing an extra special performance to benefit the gulf coast on Sunday night down at The Howlin’ Wolf and that the band would be to his choosin’. Although the joint was not quite sold out (not too surprising given the short notice and parade-weary city), Mac gave those who did show up an excellent, hits-heavy, and vocally on-point performance that included takes on “Iko Iko”, “Right Place, Wrong Time”, “Tipitina”, an impromptu speech about the gulf and a nicely segued “Save Our Wetlands” and a stretched-out “I Walk On Guilded Splinters”, a song that really accented the talented and mystickel guest horn section for the night. This was Mac’s final performance before his induction (alongside Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Tom Waits and Darlene Love) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month in New York on March 14th.

On Sunday night, the Good Doctor came out swingin’…
