We got your weekend: Filmin’ and festin’

GalHoliday

Gal Holiday

Thursday / Love a good cold beer and mustard on your fries? We’ve got good loud honky tonk on Thursday night. From 6 – 8 PM (doors open at 5:30) on Aug. 1, Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk, a country swing band from New Orleans “that incorporates original material with the best country, rockabilly, and western swing classics,” performs at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The event will also feature an art activity table for kids, catering by Miss Linda’s Soul Food, and a featured cocktail at the bar — a “summer cooler”: apricot nectar, vodka, basil-infused simple syrup, lemon juice, and soda water. Admission is $10 at the door for non-members and free for Ogden members.

Thursday, Friday, Sunday / Why plan ahead when you can do something at the last minute? On Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, the WWII Museum will showcase short films that local filmmakers wrote, shot, and edited in 72 hours. The films will be be aired and judged in three categories, and the winners will go on to compete at the Filmapalooza competition. The films will run in the museum’s Solomon Victory Theater at 9:30 PM on Thursday, 7:30 PM and 10 PM on Friday, and 7 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $10 online and $12 at the door.

Friday – Sunday / There was traffic, and my dog ate my homework: No worries, you’ll be Saved by the Bell. Attention all ’80s and ’90s babies (or parents; don’t worry, we won’t tell), you no longer have to wait until odd hours of the night to watch a beloved cult classic on TV Land and Nick at Night. Mid City Theater (3450 Toulouse Street) will pay tribute to Saved by the Bell’s cheesy (yet addicting) writing and acting, with staged readings of select scenes from the series. The show will run at 8 PM on Friday and Saturday and 6 PM on Sunday. Tickets are $15, available at eventbrite.com.

Friday – Sunday / C’est un festival du film français: Prytania Theatre (5339 Prytania Street) and the New Orleans Film Society kicks off their 16th annual French Film Festival on Friday at 7 PM, with a screening of Renoir. For the next week, Prytania Theatre will air multi-daily screenings of French films, including: Augustine, Haute Cuisine, Dans la Maison, and many more. Parlez vous français? If you didn’t understand that, no problem; all films will feature English subtitles. The festival runs until next Thursday, August 8. Tickets are $10 for New Orleans Film Society members and $11 for non-members. Visit theprytania.com for showtimes and neworleansfilmssociety.org for showtimes and tickets.

Saturday – Sunday / Who needs first when you can second line? Satchmo Summerfest, a jazz festival dedicated to Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, will run Friday through Sunday, with live music, presentations, and food/drinks. One of our favorite highlights of the fest is the second-line parade for kids (adults welcome, too), on Saturday and Sunday from 2:15 – 2:30 PM. Participants should arrive at 2 PM, on the second floor of the US Mint (400 Esplanade Ave.). If you really want to strut your stuff, come a little early to decorate and keep your own umbrella for the second line. The event is free and open to the public.
