Q&A with Kayla Elorza
Kayla Elorza
What do you do when you’re not making videos? I work as a freelance video editor around New Orleans. I currently divide my time between editing a comedy web series and editing short documentaries. When I’m not doing that, I’m sleeping or attending to other hobbies such as photography, doodling, and sky watching.
Why did you make “In the Summer”? After not having made a major video project of my own since I graduated high school in 2011, I was feeling that creative itch, badly. When Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros announced they were having a music video contest, I absolutely had to take the opportunity to create something.
You have a pretty big crew for the project. Was it hard to direct them? Hah, it certainly did not feel like a big crew when we were on set. The entire crew was rarely on set all at once due to hectic weekday schedules, but when they did arrive on set, they were driven. But directing this project was definitely a challenge. I often had to be involved in the scene to manipulate the props, all while simultaneously timing the actions and calling out instructions to the rest of the crew. As you can imagine, this caused some problems. Overall, I really loved working with this crew. My hardest workers were people I had not met until we arrived on set, and they completely exceeded my expectations.
Are you working on any more video projects? I’m almost constantly working on a video project, it’s just usually not my own project. However, my ideas for videos (especially music videos) are endless, and I have high hopes to bring them to life, I just need the right music to work with.
