Thursday / Shane‘s shout out : Dookey Shoe at the Maple Leaf (8316 Oak), 8:00 PM, cover at the door
Gregg Allman will be in town this weekend for Gretna Fest (boasting its best lineup in years), so his backing band decided to tack on a show at the Maple Leaf to get things started on Thursday under the too-good-to-be-true alias “Dookey Shoe”. Although he’s not billed for this gig, we can pray Allman might show up for a song or two (it is the Maple Leaf, after all). Bonus: stick around afterward for Johnny V’s weekly jam, featuring George Porter Jr. and Michael Lemmler.

Saturday / Friday the 13th : In an anticipation of Halloween festivities, the New Orleans Film Society will show the original Friday the 13th (1980) movie as part of the NOFS’ Moonlight Movies series, a set of free outdoor film screenings. The screening will take place at sundown at the Bywater Brickyard (at Chartres and Montegut). The event is free and open to the public; attendees are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and snacks.
Saturday / Pre-Halloween fundraiser : Dumbstruck Media will host a fundraising party — festively themed “All of them Witches” — the proceeds of which will serve as funding for 30-minute fantasy film How to Disappear Completely, about an antisocial painter whose trash-made menagerie materializes into an alternate reality, set to be shot in New Orleans.
The party will feature live music from Sea Battle, Julie Odell, Biscuithound, Biglemoi and De Lune De Luge; art exhibitions; drinks; and apparently small animals. As the fundraiser’s theme suggests, it’s a costume party; anyone who shows up in costume will be waived the cover charge (for those not in costume, the cover is $5). The party, held at 1236 Marigny Street, starts at 8 PM.
Sunday / Broomstick discussion : From October 1 through November 2, Southern Rep presents its newest play, Broomstick, set in an isolated cabin in the woods, as an old, witch-like woman recounts tales about her life, her love affairs and her cursed reputation. In a special opportunity, after the Sunday matinee (3 PM at the Ashe Center, 1712 OC Haley), Broomstick writer Joh Biguenet will discuss his experience writing the play. Tickets start at $20.
