Scotland exports and indie rock bands We Were Promised Jetpacks and The Twilight Sad took their post-punk stylings to One Eyed Jacks Friday night for one of the venue’s most memorable shows of the year.
Both bands were formed in 2003, but their careers’ didn’t really get started till 2007-09. The two boast impressive debuts and are on tour together promoting their latest efforts that were released this year. Each of the bands’ sets (the Jetpacks’ here and Sad’s here) was well rounded, with material spanning their entire catalogues.
Emotional vocals were a dominant force in both performances — each band pouring their souls into the music they performed for near full house — delivering the angst present in their albums to an even more dramatically than the recorded versions. A labyrinth of album artwork from Jetpacks’ Unravelling album served as an aesthetic backdrop for both performances, a thoughtfully fitting choice, as the evening’s sets consisted of a majestic puzzle of sound the audience didn’t seem to want to find a way out of.
