Alvvays

Indie pop band Alvvays, playing far away from their home city of Toronto, delivered a tight set of their jangly guitar rock this past Tuesday at Gasa Gasa. Accompanying the band were fellow Canadians Absolutely Free and local trio Yuppie Teeth. While the opening bands’ sounds veered toward more experimental varieties of rock, Alvvays delivered a polished power-pop sound, which they initially demonstrated on their critically acclaimed debut album. Frontwoman Molly Rankin lead the band with her strong voice and confident guitar chops while the band’s dreamy sound filled out the sonic nirvana of Gasa Gasa. Songs like “Archie Marry Me” and “Next of Kin” were even catchier in a live setting and made the band’s hour long set feel feel significantly shorter.

Alvvays is on an international tour with Absolutely Free for the foreseeable future, including a string of dates opening for indie rock gods The Decemberists. Check Yuppie Teeth’s upcoming local shows here.
