Winter Circle Presents brought two amazing acts to the Republic on Tuesday night, both fresh from appearances at Austin’s SXSW. Twin Shadow and LOLAWOLF seem to be hitting their strides musically and made for a perfect pairing. Each used the stage at the Republic to full advantage, making excellent use of the production elements of their shows, which for the most part were dark and moody.
LOLAWOLF is the musical project of actress Zoë Kravitz, who named the band after her younger siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf. A hobby, which was easily spurred on by her father Lenny Kravitz, seems to be a bit more than that now. Their dark electro-pop set was eerie and engaging and the audience loved every minute of it.
Twin Shadow continued the moodiness, but also infuses some pep along the way. The synth-pop has echoes of ’80s nostalgia all over it. The band just recently released its latest album, Eclipse, on which the bulk of the set was based. The set had a rough feel, not as polished as the albums, but no one seemed to care. The only down side was the lack of an encore. You can see a full gallery here.
