Virtual gallery: Sleater-Kinney at the Civic

Washington-born, three-woman rock band Sleater-Kinneyhas been held as one of the essential rock groups of the late 1990s/early 2000s, and in 2001 Greil Marcus named them America’s best rock band in a Time article. The band released seven studio albums between 1994 and 2005 before taking a hiatus in 2006. The last time they played New Orleans was opening for Pearl Jam at UNO Lakefront Arena back in 2003.

Then suddenly, this past October, the band revealed that they had recorded a new album, No Cities to Love, which would be released in January of this year, with a tour to follow. True to their word the band came through New Orleans this past Sunday night to for a sold out show at CBD venue the Civic Theater. Slater-Kinney’s set was primarily comprised of songs from the band’s latest release, yet still spanned their whole musical catalogue, less their self-titled release. Despite their hiatus, Slater-Kinney’s latest album and the performance they delivered at the Civic is arguably enough to evince the public that the band is something far bigger than most would have anticipated back in 1994.
