Mamma Mia! at the Saenger

When my daughter was a baby, we took 15 minutes each morning to expose her to a different genre of music. From Afro-Cuban jazz to punk rock, we covered just about everything. Though the practice was mainly for our own amusement, there was outside hope that we could shape our daughter’s preferences to lean more towards Bob Dylan than Bob the Builder. I would secretly fantasize about a tween Edith requesting music steeped in cultural significance while turning her nose up at bubble gum pop. Then came disco day.

Edith’s smile at “Dancing Queen,” served as a reminder that all good music doesn’t have deep meaning; sometimes it’s just fun, and if you’re looking for fun this weekend, check out Mamma Mia! at the Saenger Theatre.

The show itself is as light and fluffy as the music of Abba, but what it lacks in substance it makes up for in fun. The slapstick humor from a strong supporting cast shine as bright as the mirrors on a disco ball. Don’t rush out after curtain call or you’ll miss the best dance numbers of the entire production.

Mamma Mia! is playing at the Saenger Theatre through Sunday, June 11. Get your tickets here or at any Ticketmaster outlet.
