We’ve got your weekend: It all collides

Wednesday, August 30/Contemporary Arts Center (900 Camp Street): The season is ready to start, and to know what New Orleans has in store for all your arts, drama, and non-profits, you will want to head to Culture Collision on Wednesday. They have 90+ organizations as well as live performances for the evening, which begins at 5:30 PM and runs until 8:00 PM. For a full rundown of the event, you can check it out here.

Thursday, August 31/Carroll Gallery, Newcomb Art Department, Tulane University: “Labor of Love” is the name of the exhibit, and it brings together artists to exhibit their take on this theme. The various artists involved will be Clifton Faust, Ben Haist, Norah Lovell, Kelly McMahon, Kelly Mueller, Hannah March Sanders, Sam Stolte, and Hasmig Vartanian. The exhibition begins at 5:30 PM and runs until 7:30 PM. The exhibition is on view through October 6, and you can find out more information here.

Thursday, August 31/Kermit’s Treme Mother in Law Lounge (1500 N. Clairborne): Antenna: Signals Issue No. 6 is here. The theme for this exhibition is “Street Spirit,” which will be co-hosted with the Patois Film Festival, and aims to give voice to the art, people, and movements that breathe life into New Orleans’ streets. Conceived as a “live arts magazine,” Antenna::Signals is a variety show-styled event from the artists and writers of Antenna. Each “issue” of Antenna::Signals features a spread of 6-8 local artists, writers, musicians, scientists, activists and scholars whose practices relate thematically. The exhibit will begin at 6:00 PM and go until 8:30 PM, there is a $10 entry fee, and for a full line-up of the author’s, check out their event page.

Thursday, August 31-Sunday, September 3/All over the city: It’s Southern Decadence weekend, and there are so many events that you can click through here and find what tickles your fancy.

Friday, September 1/TREO (835 Tulane Ave): Blending together drinks and reform has such a sweet taste to it, and you can do both on Friday. Have a drink at TREO to support educational opportunities for women in prison and after release. There will be students and teachers there to talk with, and you can also check out the Louisiana Prison Education Coalition’ s newly released book of poetry written by women in OPP as part of an on-going UNO writing program. This is also the place to find out how you can get involved in re-entry and prison education in the community. The event begins at 4:00 PM and it goes until 10:00 PM. Sunday, September 3/Ashé Cac (1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd): Slam New Orleans gives us lots to love as they thread their words and thoughts into poetry, and now they have put those words down on paper. Slam New Orleans will be featuring Sunni Patterson and celebrating their return from the National Poetry Slam with the release of their team book, Sanctuary on Sunday. Door price is a sliding scale of $5-10 (or more if you’re feeling generous), and the book is $10.
