A Chance Encounter at Trombone’s Shorty’s concert in Lafayette Square (5/27/12)
She was Black
I am White
She was young
I am old
She carried weight,
(more weight than me)
And, her hair was straight.
(straighter than mine)
Different worlds
In different circumstances
Neither would have seen the other
Except as context
Yet our paths crossed at just the right moment
And in the context of Trombone Shorty
She busted a move
In perfect sync with my own
Falling into the beat together
Neither of us flinched
We danced, and danced, and danced some more
To Shorty’s second line
Smiling and giggling at the unlikelihood of it all
She whispered so her friends couldn’t hear
“Oooh! We’re going to be in trouble.”
But, there was no trouble, only the transcendent moment…
And, as the concert closed
I leaned over, kissed her round cheek, and whispered
“Thank you darling, you made my day!”
As we each went our separate way
