Hidden gems: The Green Wave Community Market

Whether you need handmade gifts this holiday season or just need to shed some extra satsumas, the Green Wave Community Market will be open again to the general public on December 2nd in front of the Tulane University Hillel, 912 Broadway. Buyers and sellers alike welcome!

“The Green Wave Community Market is an opportunity for Tulane students to connect to the greater NOLA community and tap into their creative side – either as a consumer or as a producer,” Tulane Junior Julia Koch effused. Koch is one of the many students who helps put on the Green Wave Community Market every month.

If you’ve never heard of the market, you’re not alone. As Koch explains, “Facebook can only reach so far;” it’s hard to spread the word, even within the Tulane community. Since the Green Wave Community Market technically is not a Tulane club, they’re not allowed to table on campus. Koch only found the club when an older member managed to sneak into the school’s activities expo. The Hillel-funded club also organizes field trips to farmer’s market around New Orleans, opening the city to students and encouraging them to explore their community. “They really try to pop that Tulane bubble,” Koch states.

Thick stacks of antique books, racks of vintage clothing exploding with color, sassy sewn clothing patches, and hand crafted jewelry are sold alongside bundles of healthy green produce and bottles of vibrant kombucha. Vendors from across the city come to set up stalls and sell their wares.

Anyone would be hard-pressed to think of something they couldn’t find here – and if by some miracle they could, they’re welcome to open their own stall to sell it. Community and student vendors are both invited to sell at the Market – and neither are ever charged any vendor’s fees, courtesy of Hillel. “Accessibility is the goal. We want to encourage small businesses to grow,” said Koch.

The next Green Wave Community Market will be on Sunday, December 2nd from 12:00PM until 2:00PM, bringing local products and all the joy of the holidays. It’s the perfect opportunity to get some gifts or just see what the city’s artisans have been up to. It’s easy to spend tons of time between the interesting stalls, but if you only have a few moments to spare, Koch suggests stopping by Luna Ray Vintage, 24 Carrot Garden NOLA, and Jeweler, Decor8d.
