A Suite For Miss Helen: Diminution 9/20/14
Everything has to be exaggerated now
For Helen to know what to do
When the music plays.
The more her responses dim
The harder we work, Don and I,
To get her back into the flow
So essential to her being.
When we carry the beat
She stays with us
But no longer pushes for more
What’s left in abundance
Is the electricity of her smile
And the hitch of laughter
That always seems to follow
When Don and I make clear
How we respond to the music
In ways she once led us.
