We’ve got your weekend: It’s time to play!

Thursday, July 25/Orpheum Theater (129 Roosevelt Way): The drinking, the dancing, the random acts through New Orleans like zip-lining across Bourbon Street. We know these hyperbolic representations of the city can only mean one thing — someone shot a movie in New Orleans! You can now see our city in all it spectaculars since the New Orleans Film Society is screening Girls Trip on Thursday. These summer screenings are free, open to the public, and they doors open at 6:30 with the movie beginning at 7:00.

Friday, July 26/Saenger Theater (1111 Canal Street): Are you feeling like it’s time to get a little wicked? Well, don’t. Seriously, just be nice. But, if you want to have some catharsis for that wickedness we are happy to report that the Saenger Theater has opened up ticket sales for the Broadway musical Wicked, which will be on stage in New Orleans from October 2 through October 20. This show tells the untold (well, until this book turned musical was written) story of the Wicked Witch of the West and what brought her to that wickedness (or the perception of her being wicked). Seats prices range (begin at $49), and you can find out full details here.

Friday, July 26/New Orleans Museum of Art (1 Collins Diboll Circle): You can catch visual artist and singer/songwriter Solange Knowles’ extended director’s cut of When I Get Home, featuring new scenes and musical arrangements of her interdisciplinary performance art film. NOMA will be screening the film before it makes its tour around museums in the US and Europe. Admission is free, but seating in NOMA’s Stern Auditorium is limited, so a RSVP is required to attend. The film begins at 6:30 PM, and you can find out more detials and reserve your seats here.

Saturday, July 27/Crescent City Cafe (3900 St. Charles Avenue): If you are looking to brunch with a cause, look no further. Crescent City Cafe is hosting a fundraiser called “Me +3 Brunch.” What this means is a donation of $20 enables them to serve you a meal and provide 3 meals to future cafe guests who are experiencing homelessness and hunger. You can come and eat anytime between 9:00 AM and 11:30 AM. They will be serving four different brunch options, including a breakfast burrito, pancakes with strawberries, a Kielbasa sausage, mushroom, egg bake, and a biscuit with pulled pork and hollandaise. For more information on the event, you can check out their event page here.

Sunday, July 28/Southern Rep Theater (2541 Bayou Road): This is your last chance (if you’re reading this today — Wednesday — then you can also go to this play on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) to see Southern Rep’s performance of Nairoby Otero’s play ‘Til Sunday. The play is based on historical events, intertwined with real life struggles, faced by Cuban families that came to the United States in the early 1970’s to mid 1980’s seeking political asylum. It tells the story of a young mother coming from Cuba to New Orleans with her daughter in search of a better life. Following three characters, you’ll watch the young girl grow up and prepare for her quinces. As she struggles with her identity, heritage, and loyalty, her mother struggles with her marriage and getting her husband legally to America, as her cranky old neighbor waxes on about Cuban-American relations over his backyard dominoes game. The play begins at at 3:00 for this Sunday matinee, and you can find tickets here.

Tuesday, July 30/Sidney’s Saloon (1200 Saint Bernard Avenue): Do you fancy yourself a rapscallion who is in need of a community? Sidney’s Saloon might be just the place for you Tuesday night, then. Stanley Roy is hosting “Sincerely, Stanley.” This pre-show social spectacular, will feature the all new, anonymous, Sincerely Stanley questions box. What is that? Well, you bring your burning questions and drop them in the anonymous box. These questions will be answered, and advice given, during the show by Stanley Roy. Following “Sincerely, Stanley” will be The Performative Arts Salon (begins at 8:00 PM), so be ready for a full evening of fun, whimsy, songs, stories, and shenanigans. To attend “Sincerely, Stanley,” you’ll want to get to Sidney’s by 7:00 PM, and this event is free and open to the public. For further information, check out their event page here.
