We’ve got your weekend: Theater, dancing, gallery hoping, and staining your clothes!

Thursday, August 1/Marigny Opera House (725 St Ferdinand Street): Sometimes it’s cathartic to watch other people stress out, and what better way to do that than with a Tennessee William’s Play. The Marigny Opera House is putting on The Glass Menagerie from now until August 17. If you haven’t seen or read this play think of this: A small apartment in St. Louis, a mother who is on the brink of losing it, a son whose already raw to the bone, and a sister in need of a suitor. And guess what happens? A suitor shows up, but everything rides on a dinner going perfectly well, and you can imagine that it doesn’t do exactly that. To see the outcome, you can purchase tickets (between $15-$28) and head to the theater at 7:00 PM. The play will end at 9:00 PM.

Thursday, August 1/One Eyed Jacks (615 Toulouse Street): If you haven’t noticed one of our summer trends yet, we are going to tell you about it now. There’s little we love better than a hot, summer night dance party, and this week we are spotlighting the “Fast Times: 80’s Dance Night” that happens at One Eyed Jacks. This is a time to dip back into the 80s in your get up and get out. The DJ spins all the hits from the 80s, starting at 10:00 PM, and this dance party does not have a cover.

Friday, August 2/Sidney’s Saloon (1200 Saint Bernard Avenue): Do you fancy yourself a rapscallion who is in need of a community? Sidney’s Saloon might be just the place for you Tuesday night, then. Stanley Roy is hosting “Sincerely, Stanley.” This pre-show social spectacular, will feature the all new, anonymous, Sincerely Stanley questions box. What is that? Well, you bring your burning questions and drop them in the anonymous box. These questions will be answered, and advice given, during the show by Stanley Roy. Following “Sincerely, Stanley” will be The Performative Arts Salon (begins at 8:00 PM), so be ready for a full evening of fun, whimsy, songs, stories, and shenanigans. To attend “Sincerely, Stanley,” you’ll want to get to Sidney’s by 7:00 PM, and this event is free and open to the public. For further information, check out their event page here.

Saturday, August 3/Mudlark Public Theater (1200 Port Street): Guess who is coming to town? Did you guess the cartoon-country, new-novelty, theatrical-nonsense outfit, The Opera Bell Band? Because, if so, that’s really impressive, and correct. The Opera Bell Band gleefully inflates the worn out tire of traditional American music with a full color dose of cartoon carbonation. In the words of The Riverfront Times: “[They] use a battery of acoustic instruments to summon the good-time ghosts of ragtime, calypso and bluegrass, but the OBB’s presentation, complete with clownish grease paint, floppy hats, and theatrical tomfoolery turns a regular gig into an experience.” We know; it sounds perfect for New Orleans! Well, they’ll be playing at 8:00 PM at the Mudlark Public Theater.

Saturday, August 3/Old No. 77 Hotel (535 Tchoupitoulas Street): As you get ready to hit White Linen Night, you can soak in some art in the Old No. 77 Hotel. Starting at 4:30 PM, student Artist-in-Residence Hattie Lindsley will showcase the works developed as a part of the annual summer program. Then, from 6:30 – 9:00 PM…Grab a bit of punch and check out a performance by the Cole Williams band and the opening of Building Blocks, The Culture of Architecture in New Orleans is curated by Gene Guidry, Architect, Trapolin-Peer Architects. An intersection of the prevailing cultural attitudes that have shaped New Orleans’ architecture, this show is a look at the influences of French, Spanish, and American styles, overlain with the distinctive Creole character that have become synonymous with the city’s unique neighborhoods. Remember, it all starts at 4:30, is free and open to the public, and will lead you straight to Julia Street for even more artwork.

Saturday, August 3/Julia Street: It’s time to sweat through your white linen while you stroll through the Arts District in the CBD. That’s right, it’s White Linen Night, and this year — the 25th year — will include the Julia Street Block Party (starting at 5:30 PM), the CAC’s Cool Down Lounge at the Green Room at Auction House Market, exhibitions galore, and then dance the night away with the CAC White Linen, After Dark Party. For full details and information about tickets, you can visit the CAC’s website. And to learn more about the beginning of this block party, check out the WWNO piece by Renee Peck.

Tuesday, August 6/Lafitte Greenway (2101 St. Louis Street): If you haven’t gotten your sweat on yet this summer (who are we kidding?), we have the perfect opportunity to pour out all of your insides. Friends of the Lafitte Greenway are putting on 12 weeks of free, all-levels, body positive outdoor yoga on the Greenway. That’s right, 12 weeks of moving, stretching, sweating, breathing, and sweating. All you need to bring is a friend (okay, that’s optional), water, and a towel. Also, this series is rain or shine. In the event of rain, yoga will move to the covered patio at Greenway Apartments, 2606 St. Louis St. (at Dorgenois). For full details on the event, you can check out their event page here.
