What: GLOW: An Illuminated Living Art Experience

Where: Zeitgeist Theatre (6621 St Claude Avenue)

When: Thursday, October 10 from 6:00 – 10:00 PM

Why: When we hear bioluminescent bacteria, exhibit, and transformation all in one sentence, we’re there. Still need more convincing? Well, here’s the rundown: 

Artist and scientist Hunter Cole will be hosting GLOW: An Illuminated Living Art Experience. Cole is widely recognized among the innovators in the art/science genre and is one of the first artists to produce significant works using bioluminescent light. On Thursday, the Zeitgeist Theatre will transform into a live, glowing, one-of-a-kind art experience, where guests will have the opportunity to walk into the darkened theatre illuminated by never-before-seen art created with actual, living bioluminescent bacteria and interact with dancers wearing “glowing art” costumes. I mean, need we say more? Oh, and it’s free and open to the public. Go get your glow on with us.

Wednesday, October 9/The Cove (Founders Road, 2000 Lakeshore Drive): Jazz at the Sandbar is in full speed, and they are continuing their UNO series with drummer Stanton Moore on Wednesday. Jazz at the Sandbar, held at UNO’s the Cove, is designed to provide UNO Jazz Studies students an opportunity to get real life experience performing with respected professional musicians in front of a live audience. The series is presented on Wednesday nights during the fall and spring semesters and features a different respected jazz artist each week. The concert is free for the UNO community, and there is a suggested donation of $10 to the general public. The concert begins at 7:00 PM.

Wednesday, October 9/Southern Rep Theater (2541 Bayou Road): Shotgun Cinema is welcoming in cooler weather (we can hope, righ?) and beloved films and filmmakers that linger in their minds with Full Aperture: Haunts. This program celebrates work from Sara Kathryn Arledge, Naomi Uman, Peter Hutton, Jonathan Schwartz, and John Smith in 16mm and digital formats. They’re asking $8, cash or charge. Doors open at 7:00PM, with films rolling at 8:00PM. The Sanctuary Bar inside Southern Rep will be open for all your beverage and popcorn needs, so go get full and then go get some haunts.  

Wednesday, October 9/13 Monaghan (517 Frenchmen): Get your craniums fully functioning, or — you know — somewhat functioning because every Wednesday at 8:00 PM Questionable Quiz Night takes over the city (okay, maybe we’re being hyperbolic, but we’re excited about trivia night). QQN spans three rounds (plus final jeopardy) to test that cranium of yours in all sorts of subjects. First place gets $30 off their tab, $15 off for second place, $1 off drafts for contestants, happy hour all night, and even more prizes. Friday, October 11/Saenger Theater (1111 Canal Street): Do you find yourself feeling a bit wicked now that autumn is in the air, the pumpkins are out, and witches are popping up all around town? Well, the Seanger Theater is embracing (and explaining) those witchy ways with the production of Wicked. This musical tells the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West (spoiler alert, another woman has been wrongfully demonized), and it weaves together parts of The Wizard of Oz that might have had you thinking, “Huh? Why exactly does that tin man not have a heart?”  The shows are at 7:30 PM, and tickets vary in price. You can check out showtimes and ticket prices here. 

Saturday, October 12/Second Story Gallery ( 2372 St. Claude Avenue): The Second Story Gallery has collaborated with the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation in order to present the exhibition Below the Noise by Belinda Flores-Shinshillas. Below the Noise is a series of large-scale oil paintings and printmaking installations created with the purpose of showcasing the beauty and great spiritual essence of the American Southwest desert. During the process of visually interpreting the rock formations nature very patiently formed, Flores-Shinshillas came to the conclusion that commercially made paint was not the ideal material for this body of work. She started collecting rocks on-site to use as natural pigments to create her own oil paint. And now, she’s sharing it with you. The opening reception will take place from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and the event is free and open to the public. 

Saturday, October 12/Louis Armstrong Park (701 N. Rampart): We’re not going to let you forget that this month is pasta month, and what better way to celebrate than by putting cheese on your pasta. We are talking about the NOLA Mac n’ Cheese Fest. The third-annual festival will have food vendors, music, art, entertainment, and this year they’ve added a “kid zone” and a Mac n’ Cheese eating contest. The event is free, open to the public, and it runs from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. And for those of you brave souls that want to enter the Mac N’ Cheese eating context, you must enter in-advance at https://www.nolamacncheesefest.com

Sunday, October 13/The Music Box Village (4557 N. Rampart): We know it’s never too early, or too late, to get your Halloween costume, and the Music Box Village is here to help you out. They’ll be having their Fall Market on Sunday, featuring original, independent designer and handmade Halloween costumes, masks, and much more. Also, they’ll be putting on a fashion show by New Orleans Independent Fashion at 1:00 PM, and there will be food to eat while you elbow through all the things you could be, depending on the costume you create.
