A Noble Goal 12/1/11

The ego-less state, a noble goal

But not easy to achieve

The harder you try to grasp it

The more it will recede.

The best advice I can give you

About how it to pursue

Is to laugh at yourself heartily

And everything you do

Don’t take anything personally

Not even your precious self

Give generously to others

To preserve your mental health

Remember that everything you are

And all that you came to be

Arose from the play of chance

And the laws of necessity.

So, for achievements take no credit

And for failures take no blame

Don’t forget in essence

We are all at heart the same

In the end we must face death

And death can be our friend

When death gives soul reason

For the ego to transcend

Without death there would be no meaning

And a sameness would prevail

For only death’s certainty

Insures life will not stale.

When ego confronts its limits

and yields the center stage

then soul and cosmos unite

free from time and age

Such moments of grace occur

Arriving on their own accord

And blessed are we to know

The unity of life restored
