20 years of environmental advocacy at A Studio in the Woods

A Studio in the Woods is celebrating its 20^th year of welcoming artists and scholars to retreat into its idyllic forest on the bank of the Mississippi River. The Studio is a program of Tulane University’s ByWater Institute that provides a platform for innovators to address the looming climate crisis which disproportionately affects coastal regions like Southwest Louisiana.

Noisy boats pass by across the road from A Studio in the Woods, providing a sharp contrast to the whimsical woods accessible by a long dirt driveway. Visitors pass a sculpted gate to enter a verdant sanctuary where animals and artists coexist in nature. The Studio provides cabin-esque accommodations for its residents to comfortably create within the trees and explore on-site artifacts created by Joe and Lucianne Carmichael, the founders of the program.
