The V-Side: Funky Fundraisers, Recyclable Bicycles, Brooklyn Bands

FRIDAY / Eat it up: New Orleanians love many things, but among them have to be food, dancing, and making New Orleans a better place. This Friday, Liberty’s Kitchen is throwing an event with all three. Liberty’s Kitchen is an organization that works with New Orleans youth through service, leadership, and employment plans, based appropriately enough around food. The chefs for the event are the who’s who of New Orleans cuisine, hailing from Crescent City Pie and Sausage, Company Burger, Patois, La Petite Grocery, Domenica, Cochon, and Boucherie. The event will also feature music from the Roots of Music, Brass a holics, Mia Borders, and more. It’ll be fun, it’ll be charitable, and most importantly, it’ll be delicious. FRIDAY / Live Music Blog: Nola Pick of the Week: Head down to The Republic this Friday to witness Brooklyn-based Yeasayer as they summon their pure organic melodies along with their mesmerizing array of electronica sound. Fresh off their latest album, “Fragrant World,” Yeasayer is headed into town with a propulsive, high-energy bundle of good times, so if it’s fun you’re looking for, slap on your dancing shoes and bring your body to The Republic. SATURDAY and SUNDAY / Money talks: With the national attention to the layoffs, public outcry, and general uncertainty for the future of the Times-Picayune, it all seemed to come down to the money. Maybe they should have put the writers in charge. Nell Nolan is doing it for the money this weekend with her performance “Monologues and Musings… for Money, Honey.” The proceeds of the $25 admission price go to dashTHIRTYdash, a nonprofit organization that aims to provide financial assistance the employees who are to be laid off when the newspaper stops daily publication. Nell will be joined onstage by Steve Kelly, the current political cartoonist at the Times-Picayune and stand-up comedian, and Ashley Nolan, her niece and well-known local actress. SATURDAY / Like a fish needs a bicycle: We’ve still got a few months to go until Mardi Gras, but for those of us who want a taste of the good life a little early, Katrina Brees is presenting her bikes which have rolled in parades all over New Orleans and the US at the Antieau Gallery this Saturday evening. Brees is a New Orleans-based artist, at first entering the industry as a costume designer. She also was a founder of the Bearded Oysters and Krewe of Kolossos. Her bicycles are functional sculptures– quirky, environmentally conscious, and quintessentially New Orleans. If you can’t make the opening, two of her bikes will remain at Antieau through the month of September. Saturday, 5-8 pm, Antieau Gallery, 927 Royal St.
