Local artist fuses sites and landscapes of NOLA into ‘crossings’

When you envision New Orleans, do you see its sites as spatially distinct entities — both cognitively and viscerally independent of one another? Or do they merge together, like a topographical rendering of mod podge?

Locally born photographer Rebecca Meyers creates black and white prints that fuse physically distinct New Orleans scenes and landscapes into single images. She produces these image with a technique she has developed, called ‘crossings,’ which involves layering separate images of traditional film.

Through her ‘crossings,’ Meyers aims to evoke a “journey through space. I want the viewer to feel like they are walking through, to remembering their visit there. Because the images are black and white, the old and new exist in a timeless space of memory and nostalgia.”
