Carolina Chocolate Drops continue to get comfortable with the New Orleans music scene after making an impression at Jazz Fest 2012 (they were joined by NOLA-based cellist Leyla McCalla at the time). This Friday night for Valentine’s Day, they’ll be joined by New Orleans’ own throwback artist Luke Winslow-King to make up an intriguing and old school twin bill. The North Carolina-based quartet are comprised of Rhiannon Giddens (banjo, fiddle, vocals), Don Flemons (guitar, banjo, harmonica, jug, snare and vocal), human beatboxer Adam Matta and multi-instrumentalist Hubby Jenkins. The latter two joined the GRAMMY-winning group recently after founding member Justin Robinson amicably left the band. The Drops are a striking instrumental force wielding old-timey, beat up instruments and led by Giddens’ notably alluring vocal presence. This Friday, expect to see a hefty dose pickin’ and stomping’ on the legendary stage.
