Happy Labor Day from NolaVie

Labor Day is not really for laboring. Most of us hoist a beer, fire up the grill and take some time off. But for those who want more structured celebrations, here are a few things to do today, Labor Day, Sept. 7.

Aquarium of the Americas

Aquarium of the Americas

Thanks for the (fintastic) memories: The Aquarium of the Americas turns 25 this weekend, so join the birthday party with expanded hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.), reduced admission (25 percent off), costumed characters, interactive games, and special performances. Today (Monday), Super Stars offer music for kids from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dancing Drums performs at 4 and 5 p.m. and The Little Mermaid II screens at 6 p.m. Lagniappe: Audubon Nature Institute is offering Louisiana residents a $2 general admission for adults, seniors and children every Tuesday in September to Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium. That’s a savings of up to $21.95 per person per visit.

St. Roch Market

St. Roch Market

Grill for a cause: Head to St. Roch Market between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. for a Labor Day barbecue to support Homer Plessy School. St. Roch vendors will be dishing out pulled pork, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, snowballs and more. Brass band music by the Big Easy Brawlers and arts and crafts are also on the menu. Take along art supplies for an art supply drive for the school.

Final bit of Decadence: Yes, of course it’s Southern Decadence, and the nation’s biggest gay celebration culminates today. Check the website for specifics, but if you’re still out partying tonight, you can catch the closing Southern Decadence Party with Resident DJs Tim Pflueger & JRB, and VJ Kyle D. with lights by Johnny Eubanks, plus hot Men of Oz Dancers, Dance Club of the Year at 9 p.m. at Oz New Orleans.

Waylon Thibodeaux

Waylon Thibodeaux

Road trip: Head to the bayou for another festival culminating today. The Shrimp and Petroleum Festival in Morgan City offers live music (Southern Roots, Waylon Thibodeaux, Geno Delafose and Don Rich today), arts and crafts, a car show, fireworks, a children’s village and lots and lots of shrimp dishes. And it’s free. Go to the website for directions and specifics.
