NOLA Yoga Journey: LIFE Yoga + Boutique

By Brianna Smyk

Studio: LIFE Yoga + Boutique

LIFE Yoga fluidly blends the mental and physical aspects of the practice.

Location: 5422 Magazine Street

Overview: Studio owner Suzy Rivera’s philosophy that “yoga is something that positively impacts the mind, body and spirit and … something that should be accessible to everyone who wants it” is evident in the spiritual and physical aspects emphasized in the practice at LIFE. Most classes do include some chanting and intention dedicating, which results in a positive atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a balance of mental and spiritual development coupled with a strong physical practice.

Ambiance: The bottom floor of the studio functions as a yoga boutique. Upstairs, one will find a lounge area in the back of the building and the yoga studio in the front, above Magazine Street. The large windows in the studio let in an ample amount of bright light, which is sure to bring positive energy into every practice. Another bonus: LIFE has a community garden and often hosts charity events.

Community: This community of yogis is very friendly. I did not go to a class without becoming engaged in a conversation with someone before the class began. LIFE yoga has a charming group of practitioners and teachers who make each yoga experience extremely pleasant.

Some very flexible yogis demonstrate LIFE's yoga philospohy.

Classes/My Picks: Though all the instructors at LIFE yoga are dedicated to their practices and their students and create classes that are both challenging and soothing, Lela Neef’s class was simply inspired. Lela has a Hatha background and teaches a Vinyasa Flow class on Saturday morning. She incorporates fabulous adjustments and utilizes her strong voice to clearly guide her students on a series of mentally and physically stimulating asanas.

Price: LIFE Yoga’s classes are some of the most affordable in the city: $9 per class/ $6 for students; $5 per community class.

NOLA Yoga Journey recaps one yogi’s journey through the yoga studios in New Orleans. It explores the unique yoga community of New Orleans, one that reflects the life, culture, and mindset of the city and its people.
