The V Side: Porch crawls, canine socializing, creative jazz and lots of great art

Friday / The Crawl and all: The Mid-City Porch Crawl is back. The third annual Halloween-oriented celebration (costumes encouraged) features guided visits of half a dozen gorgeous porches for adult-only drinks and treats, with proceeds going to the Mid-City Neighborhood Association. The event starts at Ralph’s on the Park and continues through the City Park area. Tickets are $45 in advance ($35 for members) and $55 day of event ($45 for members), while supplies last. Space is limited.

Saturday / Dog days: Head over to Belladoggie between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. any Saturday for free CC’s coffee and donuts. Fideaux doesn’t get the treats, but he can play in the yard with the other canines.

L’Entrepot, a new art space, launches instant art on Saturday.

Saturday / Instant masterpieces: If you can afford a latte, then you can afford this original art – created in about the same amount of time it takes to brew the aforementioned. ART-O-MATIC has impassioned artists create works right before your eyes. How it works: When the clock strikes 6, a panel of selected artists takes off. Graphite meets paper; brush meets canvas; method meets medium. As each piece is finished, it becomes available to buy. The art-in-an-instant event takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. (doors open at 5:30) Saturday at L’Entrepot, 527 Julia Street. Email info@lentrepotnola.com or call 504-333-6713 for more.

Saturday / Guantanamo in focus: We’d tell you more about After You’ve Been Burned by Hot Soup You Blow in Your Yogurt: The Guantanamo Project, but the title takes up most of our allotted space. It’s photography, it’s centered around people at Guantanamo Bay, and it’s a solo show by New Orleans artist and experimental documentarian Margot Herster. There. That should be enough to whet your appetite. Oh, yeah: The opening takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at flexspace.2, 638 Clouet St.

Saturday / Outcasts encore: It’s inspired by the 19th-century prototype that launched the avant-garde in France, but this Salon des Refuses takes cutting-edge to new levels. The unjuried exhibition features local, national and international artists in a range of media – not only visual art, but also culinary, audio and digital pieces as well. The fun starts with a reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Trouser House, 4105 St. Claude Ave. For more details visit trouserhouse.org.

Sunday / Jazz feast: Musician extraordinaire Evan Christopher teams up with Clever Wine Bar for a Pop-Up Jazz Brunch, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the bar in the American Can Building, 3700 Orleans Ave. Neither music nor menu will be ordinary: Throwing down with clarinetist Christopher will be Matt Lemmler, James Singleton, and Herman LeBeaux. Chef Bart Bell of Crescent Pie and Sausage and Huevos is creating the accompanying food, and Clever’s own Tony “the Juicer” DiMunno will compliment it all with a Bloody Mary Bar. The $20 admission includes your first cocktail. Call 504-383-3227 for more information.
