Wednesday, August 15/Below Sea Level (3820 Burgundy Street): There’s no denying it, were in the middle of a hot, hot summer. What better place to cool off than in a pool? Now in its third year WaterWorld, the Musical offers not just an opportunity to watch one of the funniest plays of the summer, but a two-hour, pre-play pool party with DJs and live music, delicious food and drinks. WaterWorld, the Musical is an interactive, swimming pool-based play adapted from the 1995 post-apocalyptic cult favorite/flop movie Waterworld. Audience members are encouraged to be part of the show and stay in the pool for showtime, though dry seating will be available. Thursday, August 16/The Drifter Hotel (3522 Tulane Avenue): If you missed the AquaMob last week, do not drown yourself in sorrows. Aqua Mob New Orleans is putting on The Last!, its parody of Peter Beagle’s The Last Unicorn, this weekend as well. What’s the story? Well, Mamou Fortune captures what may be the last unicorn left in the larger world for her Night Circus, but cannot control its fate. Determined to find the rest of its family, the unicorn enlists the help of a hedge witch and sets off on an epic adventure. Through song and synchronized swimming, The Last! explores the nature of heroism in a dark world. This show, which will run August 16-18 is the last of the shows, though, so you’ll want to dive in. Friday, August 17/Marigny Opera House (725 Saint Ferdinand): Tennesse Williams Theater Company is kicking off their fourth season with the play Vieux Carré. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Well, this play, set at 722 Toulouse Street, follows a young writer, not unlike Williams himself, who arrives one winter in the Crescent City for the first time and falls in love with the fabled French Quarter. Who hasn’t been there, am I right? It’s a dangerous affair, though, and one that involves ambiguous love triangles, desperate longing, and heartbreak. Will the boy be able to navigate his way out of the fog teeming with quarter characters, starving society ladies, hustlers, and buskers? Or will he find himself crushed in the flood of carnal and spiritual desire? The one way to find out is to go to the play. It begins at 7:00 PM on Friday and runs until Sunday, August 19. Saturday, August 18/Okay Bar (1700 Port Street): Heatwave has been on the move, and we are not referencing the humid air that loves to greet you whenever you step outside. We are talking about the dance party, which now is back to fourth Saturdays in September. In case you don’t know, Heatwave is an all-vinyl dance party hosted by DJ Ann Glaviano spinning soul / funk / r&b / garage / psych / pop dance jams from 1957-1974. Yes, Motown too. Yes, you can sing along. Yes, you can bring your mom. Your mom might go harder than you on the dance floor. She knows all the deep cuts. In other words, it’s fun, hence why it’s on this list. Sunday, August 19/Parleaux Beer Lab (634 Lesseps Street): It is time to celebrate. We know we always say that, but it’s almost always time to celebrate in this city. And on Sunday there is a celebration for the free year of free and affordable yoga in the Bywater. To celebrate, Parleaux will host, you got it, a free yoga session. The class will be all levels, focusing on core strength and the breath. The yoga begins at 11:00 AM, and if you are so moved, you can also stay for beer, which will be $1 cheaper for those who participated in the yoga. For full details, you can check out the event here.
Tuesday, August 21/Eiffel Society (2040 St. Charles Avenue): We feel a kindred connection with The Eiffel Society since are namesake is taken from that language we love, but we also love that they love to give back. On Tuesday, “Trepwork for Good” – a philanthropic event series hosted by Trepwise & Eiffel Society will highlight eight local non-profits with four Pay it Forward Happy Hour events. These events will be happening once a month from August through November, to increase awareness and fundraising opportunities for each participating organization. The first “Trepwork for Good” event will have a “Back to School” theme and will showcase two education-based non-profits, Brothers Empowered to Teach Initiative and STEM NOLA. Happy hour prices will be available all night long with $3 beers, $5 house wine, $6 well drinks + signature cocktail specials. Come thirsty as 20 percent of the bar proceeds will be split by both organizations, which will also be collecting suggested donations at the door. Each organization will have the opportunity to address the crowd and will have their own fundraising activities on-site.
