Double Teaming Miss Helen, While Dancing to the Beat 1/6/13

Double teaming Miss Helen

I trade off with Don

In playful competition

On the field of delight.

Helen shifts back and forth

Between one and the other

Dispensing smiles as favors

To each in equal measure.

Spotting a porcelain angel

She points with a finger

That dances with the beat.

Catching her intent

I join her with my fingers

As we dance in the beat.

Don jumps into the game

And dances to the angel

Cradling it with care

Bringing her to us

Never missing a beat.

Helen croons along with Louis

Singing the naughty lyrics

Making sure the angel knows

Not to expect her to share

Any of her jelly roll,

At least not today

All while dancing to the beat.

Editor’s Note: In honor of poetry month, we are publishing one poem from the series, “A Suite for Miss Helen,” by Reece Burka. This poetry series tells of the vibrant and beautiful Miss Helen, who had a dancing spirit. You can read the whole series here as well as come back each day in April for the newest poem.
