We’ve got your weekend: Sweat out the summer with dance, exercise, film, art, and more!

Wednesday July 17/St. Tammany Art Association (320 N. Columbia Street in Convington): You know that when we send you out of the city that we’re doing it for good reason. Professors and filmmakers from throughout the region are holding a series of informal screenings and conversations on film. Here is the line-up for the next few weeks: July 17, Sequence Structuring in Screenwriting (LSU Professor of Screenwriting Mari Kornhauser leads a conversation on Damien Sayre Chazelle’s Whiplash); July 24, The Language of Film (Loyola Professor of Film Studies Mike Miley takes an in-depth look at Sofia Coppola’s film, The Bling Ring), and July 31, Cinema Verite (Pontchartrain Film Festival Director Sharon Edwards discusses fact and fiction in Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool); and August 7, Talking About Film (UNO Professor of Film Angela Catalano discusses film form and style, with film clips). Wendesday July 17’s screening and talk begins at 7:00 PM, and you can find out full details here.

Friday, July 19/The Howlin Wolf (907 S. Peters Street): While you shake what your momma gave you, maybe you want to think about the whole idea of mommas and who wants to be one. In other words, you can head to The Howlin Wolf on Friday to support reproductive rights and the organizations that fight for them. They have a lineup that includes Miss Mojo, Valerie Sassyfras, DJ Soul Sister, spoken work performances, stand-up comedy, and more. Tickets are $15, the doors open at 8:00 PM, and you can find out full details here.

Saturday, July 20/Saturn Bar (3067 St. Claude Avenue): You might have been sweating the arrival of Barry last week, but now you can sweat for fun. Saturn Bar is holding its Mod Night with DJ’s Kristen and Pasta on Saturday. If you’ve never been to Mod Night get ready to twist, hop, and do whatever other dance move you feel moved to place on display. The dancing begins at 11:00 AM, and there is no cover. For more details, you can check out the event page here.

Saturday, July 20/Second Story Gallery (2372 St.Claude Avenue): It’s the second Saturday, turned third Saturday of the month (thanks to Barry), which means Bywater’s art galleries will have their doors open and some wine flowing. The Second Story Gallery is hosting an opening reception for Something Old, Something New, an exhibition of works by members of the artists’ cooperative, on Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. In Something Old, Something New, Second Story Gallery member artists juxtapose works from earlier in their careers with new works. Featured artists are Michael Alford, Ron Bennett, Amy Bryan, Belinda Flores-Shinshillas, Natori Green, Sara “Saharah” Hollis, Gina Laguna, Charles Lovell and Cynthia Ramirez. The reception to meet the artists is free and open to the public.

This is a donation-based Pilates classes for all levels. There will be mats provided, so you can just show up and jump into the session. It begins at 10:00 AM, and there are follow-up classes (including on on Wednesday July 24). For a full rundown of the event, check out their event page here.

Tuesday, July 23/The Lafitte Greenway (2101 St. Louis Street): If you haven’t gotten your sweat on yet this summer (who are we kidding), we have the perfect opportunity to pour out all of your insides. Friends of the Lafitte Greenway are putting on 12 weeks of free, all-levels, body positive outdoor yoga on the Greenway. That’s right, 12 weeks of moving, stretching, sweating, breathing, and sweating. All you need to bring is a friend (okay, that’s optional), water, and a towel. Also, this series is rain or shine. In the event of rain, yoga will move to the covered patio at Greenway Apartments, 2606 St. Louis St. (at Dorgenois). For full details on the event, you can check out their event page here.
